As many of you will have heard, this year presented us with a special challenge. On 20 May 2022, a tornado tore across our main plant in Ovenhausen, in the district of Höxter, North Rhine-Westphalia. With help from a lot of people, we were quickly able to secure the site, the buildings, and the equipment, clean up, and repair enough of the damage to allow us to restart production within a short time. Andreas Jung, Ralf Lüke, and our entire Maderas team would like to take this opportunity to repeat their heartfelt thanks for this assistance!
As the end of the year approaches, we want to support a charitable project again. This year, we’re making a donation to the non-profit organisation ARCHEMED, Doctors for Children in Need, which provides medical and humanitarian assistance to sick children and expectant mothers in Eritrea, one of the poorest countries in the world. The fantastic project to build a new mother and child clinic in the Eritrean city of Keren is particularly close to our hearts. The day of the birth is the most dangerous day for mother and baby. In Europe, perinatal centres exist to ensure they both receive the best possible protection. Keren is the second-largest city in Eritrea and only has an old hospital, which is much too small. The concept of the new building is a model project for the whole country.
The coronavirus pandemic unfortunately brought the project to a temporary halt, but this year the clinic has been completed to the extent that it can open this month. It will make a major contribution to further reducing mortality among mothers and newborns.
